OKEBET Explains What Is a Payline, Then Where Ways Replace Lines

What is a payline? It is a fixed pattern that matching symbols must follow to pay. That is the whole definition, and it explains why a slot with five lines and a slot with 1,024 ways cannot be compared by the number alone. The examples below come from studio pages, not from a lobby, so they apply on any site.
What Is a Payline? The Fixed-Pattern Answer
Picture a 5-reel grid. A payline might run straight across the middle, or dip and rise in a zig-zag. Three matching symbols on the pattern pay, and the same three off the pattern do not.
Betsoft’s Gemini Joker is a clear case: five reels and five paylines. The gain is a game you can read in seconds. The cost is that a near miss one row away pays nothing.
| Layout | How wins are counted | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Paylines | Symbols must follow a fixed pattern | Gemini Joker, 5 paylines |
| Ways to win | Symbols on adjacent reels from the left, any row | Super Ace, 5x4, 1,024 ways |
| Large ways grid | The same, on a taller grid | Mega Ace, 6x6, 46,656 ways |
| Neither | The player shoots targets | Mega Fishing, zero paylines |
Where the Ways Number Comes From
Multiply the rows on every reel together and you get the ways count. On a 5x4 grid each of the five reels shows four rows, so 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 1,024. A 6x6 grid gives 6 multiplied by itself six times, which is 46,656.
That is why Mega Ace’s ways count is about forty-five times Super Ace’s. More ways does not mean a better game. On JILI’s pages Super Ace tops out at 10000x and Mega Ace at 1500x, so the larger grid carries the lower ceiling.
OKEBET Paylines and What a Spin Costs
Some payline games let you change the line count, and each line carries its own stake. At ₱2 a line across 5 lines, a spin costs ₱10. Turn off two lines and the spin costs ₱6, but the wins on those lines disappear too.
- Gain: adjustable lines give you a lever over the cost per spin.
- Cost: fewer lines means fewer patterns that can pay.
- Gain: a ways game charges one price, which is easy to budget.
- Cost: you cannot cut cost by dropping ways.
Red Flags to Watch For
- A game with no layout line on its rules screen, so you cannot tell lines from ways.
- A claim that more paylines always means more wins; lines change how a spin is counted, not the return.
- A line count on the studio’s page that does not match what the game itself shows.
- A stake that jumps when you change the line count and does not say why. At ₱2 a line, 5 lines should show ₱10 and not ₱12.
- A 5x4 grid that shows anything other than 1,024 ways.
A mismatch between two sources is the signal, because a studio’s own page should agree with its game.
Fishing Games Have Neither
Mega Fishing, per JILI’s page, has zero paylines, an octopus wheel and a 950x top win. There is no grid to count, because the stake is per shot and the value is carried by each target. A payline question for a fishing game has a short answer, which is none.

The call: read the layout line first, price the spin second, and compare lines with lines and ways with ways.
How to Get Started
-
Find the layout line on the rules screen
It reads as reels by rows, then either a payline count or a ways count. Write both down.
-
Work out what a spin costs
Some games charge per line, so more lines mean a bigger stake. Others charge one price for all ways.
-
Compare layouts only with their kind
A five-line game and a 1,024-ways game are built differently, so compare each with its own type.
